Artist Sheena Bharathan

A childhood fascination to paint grew into a chosen career in art.

My journey as an artist began in childhood—with a quiet fascination for drawing, colors, and storytelling through images. Painting was my way of making sense of the world long before I knew the language for it. Over the years, what started as a creative escape became an enduring passion—and ultimately, a chosen path.

While I initially pursued a professional career in child development and psychology—earning dual Master’s degrees and working as an educator and child psychologist in Dubai—art remained a constant companion. A move to Singapore in 2011 offered the space and clarity to follow that passion fully. I formally entered the art world in 2012, training under established artists and later studying Western painting at the respected Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.

My early works focused on delicate figurines, but over time, my practice expanded to include figurative compositions and semi-abstracts. A deep interest in texture soon became a defining element of my work. Today, layers, bold minimal color palettes, and expressive forms are central to my visual language—each piece inviting viewers to explore not just what is seen, but what is felt.

My work has been showcased at international exhibitions and art fairs across Singapore, India, Japan, Italy, South Korea, Malaysia, UAE, Vietnam, Myanmar, Ukraine, and Turkey. It is part of the permanent collection at the Haegeumgang Museum of Art in South Korea and was featured at the Florence Biennale in 2023. In 2024, I was honored with the International Art Prize from the Japan Art Institute.

When I’m not painting, I find joy in traveling, gardening, spending time with family, and reconnecting with the rhythm of my hometown—all of which continue to shape the stories I tell on canvas.
